Marinera is an elegant dance that shows a love interest between a man and a woman.The man tries to impress the beautiful girl by showing off his moves: steps such as “El Zapateo”, and “El Cepillado”. The woman on the other hand,flirts with the man with her facial expressions and hip movements: she is very elegant and arrogant and seems to have no interest in the man. The man tries to astound the girl even more .

Marinera is a dance that originated in Peru in 1879 in honor of the great "marines", the Peruvian navy, who fought against Chile. ("Center for Traditional Music and Dance"). It was called “Zamacueca” when Peru was friends with Chile but after the war with this country, the named changed. This dance is combination of Spanish, and African dance. The main instrument used for this dance is called “El Cajon”, which is a wood box of four sides, and which one has a center whole. Sometimes a man rides a horse in this particular dance while the woman dances on the ground. There are currently over 6 types of Marinera. The dances you will be learning are the most famous ones : Marinera Norteña and Marinera Limeña.
